The pile right outside the patio door was roughly 24 inches deep... my poor little rat terrier dove off into it and disappeared!! Love winter in the Midwest!

Yes that is open water... I use 10 ft and 4 ft bamboo poles laid across the top to support a net to protect from leaves, sticks, etc. and to keep my tank heaters in the middle. The snow pile in the middle is what collected on top the cross-over point of two of the poles. And you can see the "sag" spots were the the net is actually in the water (well, would you have gone out to fix it?)
